Every country’s jail system is an important part of the government. This is also true in Ghana, where the jail system is an important part of the justice system. As a Ghanaian, you should know how many prisons there are, who runs them, and how they work. Ghana has 43 jails, and they are all different kinds. The number includes all of the following:

 

• 14 local prisons
• 7 female prisons
• 1 juvenile capacity
• 11 open camp prisons
• 1 special facility
• 7 central prisons
• 1 maximum-security prison
• 1 medium-security prison

The Ghana Prisons Service’s duties

 

The group does the following things on behalf of the Ghanaian government:

• To make sure that prisoners are well cared for. They do this by making sure inmates’ rights are protected, making sure they have good health, and giving them other tools and things they need.
• To help prisoners change and improve to become better people when they get out. To do this, they give the inmates the best possible training and spiritual education, among other things.

The Ghana Prisons Service says that a jail should be able to hold a maximum of 10,000 criminals. But it’s been pointed out that most jails can hold up to 15,000 people, a huge overcrowding problem. Here is a list of some of Ghana’s most well-known jails.

 

Ankofo Maximum Security Prison

 

The government built the prison to help ease crowding in other jails around Ghana. Most of Ghana’s dangerous inmates rushed into the building when it was done. Compared to other buildings, this one was built well because it is where the cops live.

 

Inmates can also show off their skills through carpentry classes at the center. This will help make the building a better place for those who live there. Food, water, and a place to sleep are given to the locked-up people.

 

Ankaful Maximum Security Prison

 

The location of the building is on the Cape Coast. Some of the most dangerous criminals in Ghana are kept there. The building was built to meet world norms for the highest level of protection. It can hold more than 2,000 prisoners at once.

 

It also has a health care unit, a mixed sports field, a block for prisoners and dorms, and a modern administration block. When the second part of the building is done, there will also be a training room where prisoners can learn basic skills for staying alive.

 

Kumasi Central Prison

 

One of the oldest jails in Ghana, it was built after the Europeans took over the Ashanti Region in the early 1800s. Nsawam Female Medium Security Prison

 

It is one of the biggest jails for women in Ghana, taking up 5.16 acres. Set up in 1973 to give female prisoners a safe place to stay while being rehabilitated and changed. They give the female prisoners who want to learn the chance to do so, and the inmates take national tests just like the rest of the students.

 

Borstal Institute for Juveniles

 

The Senior Correctional Center is one of Ghana’s largest jails for young people. They deal with the cases of children under 18 who have been locked up for breaking the law. Their main goal is to change and help the kids get back on their feet so they can be accepted by society when they are old enough.
